A Vista laptop (not mine; I am proud to never have owned a physical Vista machine ) hibernated with a virus running in memory. I can find and clean the infection using Linux-based antivirus but of course, as soon as I start up Windows the infection is back there. This is the state I received the machine in.

Is it safe to just delete the hiberfil.sys from Linux? Will Windows boot fresh then?

TIA

AVG + Avira on their own rescue CDs, then BitDefender + Kaspersky on Ubuntu.

Yes, my mistake I didn't read the Linux part!
What Linux distro did you use? Was it on a USB Stick?

I think so but I didn't want to actually let Windows start.

OK, went ahead and deleted it - everything seems to work. Now on to more scanning and cleaning...
