Update: Bought an HP MediaSmart server with 8GB RAM and 2TB disk off ebay for $140 this past September. Works wonders...most of the time. |

I just borrowed a device to measure the power consumption of my regular PC, 2,8 Ghz Pentium D with 4 drives and and Geforce 7600 GFx card. If I kept that running 24x7x365 with the current power price it would cost me 1600 USD per year :(

What electricity cost money?
There are several solutions to that problem...
Thats so easy to solve, buy a http://www.apc.com/products/resource/include/techspec_index.cfm?base_sku=SY125K500D and get 2 sets of batteries.
Take one set to work charge it, take it home and next day take the other set :-)
the other solution, drill a hole in the wall to the nighbours house and steel from him...
actually there is a somewhat easier solution, buy a "server" hardware that takes less power, buy green discs (5900 RPM) and shut it down at night, and for the mail part, buy a MX backup from

The save on electricity alone in the first year, should cover most of the new hardware.

I fail to see how installing PlutoHome makes one an ubergeek. I would think it would make one a glutton for punishment.
Yes, I'm irritated with Linux again. I have yet again found one more thing to add to the multitudes of things wrong with that OS.

Although having a WHS may be a great idea, to have one large enough to back up all I have....yikes, thats some set of drives.
Really important stuff on 2 physical drives. Ongoing stuff activily been used backed up to LTO2 tape.
I take it WHS uses similiar tech to Server 2008 backups?

Great question. Here's a partial answer....
When was the last time that these machines were backed up? WHS will back them up every night (except the Linux box....but I bet someone will write an add-on for that).
Even if they have been backed up, how easy is the restore? Are all of the drivers handy? How easy is the process? How long would a restore take? WHS backs up your hardware drivers and makes restoring a PC (say, after a HDD crash) VERY easy. AND FAST. Restoring single files are as simple as 'drag-n-drop'. My parents could do it. (and that's saying a LOT  )
Remote access? Have you ever used the remote function of SBS? WHS has similar functionality. Get instant access to your files on the WHS server, or take Remote Control of your PC. Again, not yet available for a Linux box....but I bet it wont be long.
WHS will also be cheaper than Windows 2003 Standard. Current guesses are around $200 verses $600? retail for Win2k3 STD. The only caveat (that I've found so far) is that WHS cannot be a DC, nor can it be a member of a domain.
There will be a lot of "Add-On's" soon as well. HP will have one that you get if you buy WHS hardware from them.
The "pre-built" hardware that I've seen looks cool....but a bit pricey. I think we'll see these come down though.

Why would I want WHS when I already have 1 Windows Server 2003 R2, 2 XP Pro, 1 Vista Business, 1 Windows 2000 Advanced Server, and a sometimes Linux, sometimes BSD test server already in the house?
And since most of those are running on older server-class hardware, I shudder to think what my actual power bill is to keep them runnning! (I do shut them down at night though...usually...OK, now and then...when my wife complains about the noise from all the CPU and case fans. But I DO try.) |
