Posted - 08/30/2007 : 4:47:03 PM When attempting to run a CompletePC backup to a external WD USB hard drive, I get
The backup failed.
Not all volumes containing system data are included in the backup. (0x80780018)
This is on a Lenovo T61..of which I have several and HAVE gotten complete PC to backup just fine. There seem to be no events in the event viewer listed with this failure.
Any thoughts? I've searched MS for that error code and have seen a few others with this problem, but nothing official... |

Posted - 10/12/2009 : 3:50:37 PM Ran into this today with a Lenovo R61i Laptop. Using info from this link Vista Fails Backup and the Intel Link.
I will post findings... |

Posted - 10/06/2007 : 11:03:21 AM You might give wbadmin a try. The GUI for CompletePC is, well, limited, but wbadmin gives you many more options. Look at Newsletters #63 and 64.
And while I have no personal experience with it, TurboMemory has "wobbly add-on that could make a system unstable" written all over it IMHO. |

Posted - 10/03/2007 : 09:45:51 AM The t61's are doing 'okay' for me...not fantastic. Some builds are stable with no problems, some are not ESPECIALLY with users who are installing software that "works" with Vista but wasn't built for vista....specifically lots of the PALM stuff.
The reboot requirement is annoying with the turbomem stuff, and I've used the computer with it enabled and disabled and seen no visible performance increase. I haven't done any actual benchmarking but from a day to day use, I can't 'feel' the benefit of that technology...which cost us more AND makes things less stable.

Posted - 09/14/2007 : 12:52:15 PM For fear of being repetitive, I would like to confirm this behavior in Windows Complete PC Backup running on a Lenovo T61. To disable ReadyBoost and ReadyDrive I had to run the Intel Turbo Memory Console (pre-installed on the computer), and then reboot. Only after taking these steps could I get an extra screen in the Complete PC wizard allowing me to actually select a drive for back up.
You cannot completely disable these features in Safe mode, and Vista will not allow its Backup program to run in this mode anyway.
After backing up the system, I re-enabled ReadyDrive and ReadyBoost (although it will not show a tick/check in the box until you reboot once again).
As a sidenote, just to vent some frustration, my experience with my month-old T61 has not been altogether satisfactory. I suspect this has more to do with the inherent instability of Vista and Office 2007 than the underlying hardware. After a PowerPoint presentation last week, the program and the computer locked up. Vista would not reboot. Yes, I had a backup using Lenovo's Rescue & Recovery utility, but it failed to recover Windows to a bootable condition, and I had start from scratch. |

Posted - 08/31/2007 : 09:24:52 AM Yes Mark,
I confirmed it on another box this AM. These IBM T61's have the Santa Rosa Chipset (Centrino 2 Pro) which have 1GB 'integrated'...half is used for ReadyBoost, half for ReadyDrive. I'm not sure if the error I described above would be related to ReadyBoost or ReadyDrive, or the use of both. From MS' site: Windows ReadyDrive is a new feature in Windows Vista that enables PCs equipped with a hybrid hard disk—a new kind of hard disk that adds flash memory to a standard mobile PC hard disk drive—to enjoy better performance, greater reliability, and longer battery life.
I can understand the error I received if some system files were being loaded in/out of that flash memory (using ReadyDrive) but CompletePC can't access that flash memory for backup.
Here's the link to information about Intel Turbo Memory. http://www.intel.com/support/chipsets/itm/#anchor1

Posted - 08/31/2007 : 07:38:57 AM Hey Dave --
So you're saying that having ReadyBoost and ReadyDrive running kept CompletePC from running? Interesting. I wonder what happens if you just pop in a USB stick and do ReadyBoost. I'll have to give that a try. |

Posted - 08/30/2007 : 5:11:18 PM Okay, so after my post I tried to identify every difference between the box with the CompletePC working and the CompletePC not working. Essentially they are the same in every way...apps, group policies, etc.
Then I remembered that the one that worked had a built-in Verizon Wirless WAN card...So what? you might ask...well, for that card to be integrated we had to give up something that all the others had...integrated 1GB of ReadyBoost and ReadyDrive managed by the Intel Turbo Memory application. Sooo, out of curiosity I disabled both ReadyBoost and ReadyDrive, rebooted and tried to kick of a CompletePC...and its working.
So, there's your answer...at least in my case....but I would bet many others (at least those with IBM Thinkpads and Intel Ready Boost pre-enabled)
Perhaps someone more familiar with the ready technologies can explain why it's a prob...I've got theories, but can't prove em. |
