Posted - 06/07/2008 : 3:41:12 PM Right, this is weird. Since upgrading to Vista Business, my PC keeps switching itself on. I've disabled automatic updates and Windows Defender updates and I can't see where Nod32 would be waking the PC up for updating itself but STILL it does it, and it's driving me insane.

Posted - 06/17/2008 : 1:32:00 PM I know that servers log when they shut down / start up, perhaps Vista does also? That'd help. |

Posted - 06/17/2008 : 12:02:53 PM If the time is random sounds like it's a "magic packet". Easy to find out, just run NetMon all night and look at the trace for the Magic Packet. |

Posted - 06/17/2008 : 11:05:05 AM The BIOS time was set to 6pm and has been set to that for a couple of years. It wasn't changed when Vista was installed (no need to). The PC was switching itself on at random times.
Worst case scenario is that my server has been compromised and someone was being pesky and sending the WOL signal (I have an iucon on my server desktop to do it) to the desktop PC. I wouldn't have thought that this was the answer though - surely if someone had got in then that would be the last thing they'd be up to!

Posted - 06/17/2008 : 10:44:09 AM Have you figured out if the wake-up is a magic packet (network) or BIOS? Is the BIOS up to date? Is the time correct? Try changing the time.

Posted - 06/17/2008 : 04:43:57 AM Seriously though, it's weird. The PC in question is behind NAT so it's not getting anything from the Internet. It has had the auto power on BIOS setting enabled for at least two years and this has only started happening since Vista was installed.

Posted - 06/16/2008 : 05:01:22 AM It is probably Microsoft who has made a deal with the electrical companies, so the PC's boots up in the middle of the night, and uses 1000's of Watts.. Or Maybe Bill is friends with George who is friends with king Abdullah who wants to sell more oil.. Who knows..
Maybe the Saudis are sending out WOL packets in the middle of the night...

Posted - 06/09/2008 : 03:48:35 AM I've disabled the WOL functionalitry on the box and it didn't switch on last night. Quite why it's started doing this since Vista was installed I have no idea.

I suppose your best bet is the BIOS interpreting the clock incorrectly. I would set auto on to 4 am and see if it goes on at midnight. Or turn auto on off if it's an option. |

Posted - 06/08/2008 : 4:58:59 PM It is configured to receive WOL traffic, yes. Only one other box is on the network though and that only sends a WOL signal when I specifically run the utility manually. There's a BIOS startup time set but that's 6pm. This box has been routinely switching on at around 2-3am. The power is certainly off as there's no lights (flashing power, etc) on the case and I always shut down. I've even tweaked group policy to always shut down instead of hibernate. It's weird!

Posted - 06/08/2008 : 09:57:21 AM You havent configured it to be able to wake on LAN traffic or anything ? |

Posted - 06/08/2008 : 09:57:05 AM Tim,
there's no way an OS can switch a PC on from "true Off" state (as opposed to hibernating or standby). Check your Power settings in BIOS. Vista might have changed something there like Wake on mouse or even timed wake up.
