Hello there

Every few days my first storage database seems to need mounging. When I click Mount I get the message "At least one committed transaction log file is missing. Mounting the database will result in data loss. Do not take this action unless you cannot locate the missing log files. Are you sure you want to continue?

I clicked No and moved a file called e00.chk and tried again. I then get the error:

What's causing this and how can I fix it?

The anti-virus has been configured to exclude Exchange, and the backup started to go wrong the same time Exchange did.

Only had one problem since, being given the option to connect to a temporary database or the old one every tiome I started Outlook. Sorted it by creating a new profile.

Are you running file level antivirus software on this server? And if you are, did you configure the software to exclude all Exchange related files? See here: http://technet.microsoft.com/en-us/library/bb332342(EXCHG.80).aspx

Second, make sure you have a working backup and that you've tested the restore procedure.

Tanks very much for your help.

That worked and my emails are coming in from the last couple of days.

Now I have more time, is there anything I can do to see what caused this in the first place?

Apologies, old name. The directory you need to rename is C:\Program Files\Microsoft\Exchange Server\Mailbox\First Storage Group. Assuming Exchange is installed in the default location for SBS 2008.

The -515 error indicates that log files are missing and so does the -1216, that's why I started with the suggestion to inspect the file system and virus scanner. Process Explorer might be helpful with that task.

On the other hand, troubleshooting a corrupted database is a delicate and complex operation. Unfortunately essential files have already been moved, deleted and renamed so it will be extremely difficult for us to fix this through a forum.

Guys, just a thought: 0x80004005 means that there is an Access Denied somewhere. How about trying to troubleshoot what this is? NTFS problem maybe? Process Explorer to the rescue?

Okay. Please dismount the store first, if it happens to be mounted but probably not. Next rename the folder MDBDATA to MDBDATA.old. Now mount the store again and confirm with Yes or OK. Exchange created a new and empty database and you can send and receive email again, or proceed with importing the PST files.

After that you can remove the MDBDATA.old folder and free op approximatly 8 GB of disk space.

Sorry if I'm not answering your questions correctly.

This is my test sevrer I use at home, so it's only my emails.

I've had no email for 2 days now but I have a mail-hop backup so as soon as I can get Exchange back up and running I'll get my emails.

I've backed up my emails to a PST file so I'm happy to wipe the lot and start again, even reformat and install SBS over if necessay, though rather notif I can do it without resorting to that.

I appreciate people helping, but I guess the down side to forums is having to wait for replies, in the emantime still getting no email.

To wobble, the database is approx 8GB.

So what is the objective? Do you want to recover the data in the database? Do you want your users to be able to use the server? If we fix the server, are you able to restore the data from backup?

Also, we're trying to help here and it would be great if you could answer all our questions. This really helps us to point you in the right direction.

Just to add.

I renamed the e00.chk file and tried mounting it again (this worked last week) but I now get:

A new 8kb file named e00.chk appears, created at the time I try to mount the database. It's says it's a recovered file fragment.

I've put all the files back into the First Storage Group folder.

I click on Mount Database and get:

Changing the folder name, do you mean first storage group? I tried to create a new database but I got the same error.

I recommend you move the files back and please make sure you don't permanently delete any of the files. Doing so may result in data loss. Most important now is to have the database starting again, isn't it? Next I would export your mailboxes to PST ASAP.

What version of SBS?
What service pack of SBS?
What version of Exchange?
What service pack of Exchange?

How much data in the Exchange database? Size of the database?
I'd move both the log files and the database files to the same location first.
To start a new Exchange DB, stop exchange services, rename the MDBDATA folder to MDBDATA.old and restart the Exchange services. When you go to mount the database it will tell you its going to create new database files.

Just to check, I un installed the anti-virus software completely. No change.

I've run eseutil /p and /mh and still the same.

I've seen a suggestion to remove all files from the Database store except the database but no change.

The message I'm getting now when I click mount is:

My first guess would be to insepct the file system and check the virus scanner. Are the Exchange files and directories excluded from scannning?
