Setting Google as Default Search Engine with IE8 via GP.

Do I need to install the Google Snap-in on each PC for this to work?

If yes, can I install that snap-in via GP? The PCs are blocked from that address via firewall rules.

Or can I simply get it installed on a WIN 7 PC and then export those REG settings and push "that" out via GP?

*NOTE* I tried this but could only get the HKCU to update not the Machine...

If you have a good link on this for IE8 with the correct GUIDs and a good step by step it would much appreciated.

*NOTE* I was able to update the admx and adml files but it's an all or nothing for the entire Domain. I am not sure if this will work for the client.

I was thinking about creating a custom template..?

Well,,, Not sure how or IF I was the cause but a bit of a coincidence that when I updated the admx and adml files and added them to the Central Store Internet access came to a screeching halt in the network, for EVERY PC and Server. Including Chrome and FireFox.

Removing the updated files and rebooting the firewall once again allowed internet access.

Nice...

Well Mark, that had occurred to me but I was 'hoping" it was along the lines of GP still being treated as the plumbing that no one wants to talk about. As Darren said ~ "GP is the single biggest marketing tool for Microsoft pushing SCCM on everyone."

But to make it that hard to shove BING? That's pretty Apple of them. <g>

Thanks Evgenij! I have a couple other sites with similar info however this one was well written and verified what I was trying to do. I will post once I am able to have a proof of concept.

I was surprised how difficult they made this setting. I would have thought it would be really easy via preferences, but the button to set the search providers is grayed out.

Thanks Again!

Tim,

this seems to offer a complete solution while under the hood you're still pushing out the SearchScopes key:
