I think we can see that older systems will be around for a while and then all of a sudden, a company will switch to VDI and some cloud.
At that point many techs will be like AS/400 operators. No clue about the new technologies and way behind on the learning curve.
Think about it?
Do you miss line printers?
Green bar reports?
Token ring?
Dial up modems?
Do you miss Novell?
How about boot floppies?
Do you miss the config.sys file?
How about keeping ethernet cables neat on the switches. Isn't that a productive use of corporate funds?
The point is IT is there to make profit for the company.
If not, it's an expense and if you own a business, expense is what you want to lower.

That was Citrix with their VDI-In-A-Box, formerly Kaviza, offering. |

There was something in the news before the Wyse story hit the wires. Some VDI s/w company announced they were partnering with Dell to make a VDI appliance. |

Some say byod, and they are happy with an iPad/ phone/ tablet.
But what about video conference, or a designer or have you seen the Dell financial virtual desktop.
The Wyse or pano device has a home in that situation.
Network engineer does Wyse, LAN, CPE, maybe routing and Von, few server engineers in data center is 1 view. |

What's this leading up to, technically?
Your data is in the Cloud, you access it with a dumb terminal.
So, in the (most extreme?) cases, not only would you have no servers onsite but no desktops onsite either?
Would probably keep laptops since I don't see people running around with a WYSE terminal. |

Dell have build a big Open Stack platform as their "Cloud Offering" based off Equalogic Storage, and Dell Blades.
Actually they have aaS for just about anything they can spell!
The Wyse buy allows them leap a few development cycles (Pano, Cloudium devices) and have a device they can sell as a zero client.
Whatever Citrix/ MS do with terminal services, remote desktop will be a teller.
Just for info Citrix also are spending, more on the cloud than device stuff (they bought Cloud Stack 12ish months ago, and it all builds into their Netscaler appliance) |
