Posted - 02/16/2009 : 11:23:23 AM If you had to pick one AV solution from these THREE which would it be?
1. Sunbelt Vipre
2. AVG
3. BitDefender
I know there are a lot of others out there, that may be better, but I'm just curious about these three. You input is appreciated, and if you could quickly say why (or why not) you would that would be great too.
Thanks,

Posted - 04/01/2009 : 10:20:23 AM I came close to getting Vipre...but ended up going with eEye's BLINK instead. I'm running Vista32 on a laptop with hardware DEP enabled since 20070215. Started with Norton since it came with the box but then went to Kaspersky (better) and then BLINK (best).
Just my opinion. |

To be honest, I was surpised to see you mention this. From everything I've been told and read, this is not true. Not arguing, mind you, but it would be good to know for sure. Where did you hear this?
From the Sunbelt CEO: "We just took an approach that everything was from scratch, I mean every single line of code in VIPRE is brand new, it's brand new code, it's new, within the last year and a half to two years, there's nothing old in this thing."
In depth technical interview is here: http://www.h-online.com/security/New-VIPRE-fangs-An-interview-with-Sunbelt-CEO-Alex-Eckelberry--/features/112535/0

Again, this is just FWIW. I don't work for Sunbelt, but I do like their product. I guess even if they did buy someone out - they sure are investing heavily in development.

Posted - 02/18/2009 : 06:02:35 AM AVG. We use it and like it. Very good with x64 and keeping up with new MS releases.
Forefront is a resource hog on the management server. Too much h/w requirements for SME's. The idea was good but sticking MOM underneath wasn't so smart IMHO. |

We've got a Forefront MVP on here (I think but don't remember who) but until (s)he chimes in, I can confirm this experience. I didn't spend much time on this either so wouldn't go so far as to saying that there is no way but rather that it would have been too much hassle for an evaluation run. |

Posted - 02/17/2009 : 4:10:11 PM Not sure, quite possibly but it may not have been readily apparent how to do it. Then again, I am no SQL guru either. It just seemed a bit ridiculous to need it, so I bagged it. |

Posted - 02/17/2009 : 3:52:56 PM If I recall, I went to install it on my machines since it came with the action pack, and it wanted to install yet ANOTHER instance of MSDE, or SQL express, or whatever it's called now. So I canceled the install or put it on the shelf. My SBS box already uses a majority of it's CPU on the SQL instance already there, I was not about to put another one on there. |

Posted - 02/17/2009 : 2:41:26 PM I find it interesting that no one has commented on Microsoft Forefront, yet. I am thinking about giving it a whirl on my test machines.

Posted - 02/17/2009 : 1:20:20 PM There are SEVERAL posts applauding the abilities of ESET NOD32 (I know it's not on your list). I've replaced McAfee and Symantec shops with NOD32 successfully. |

Posted - 02/17/2009 : 12:30:04 PM Guys-
I got wacked with something nasty at home about a month ago. It was re-directing google searches to ad sites. Vipre finally wiped it out, but has some issues running on 64 bit hardware/OS (X64 XP). I discovered that removing Vipre if you need to on 64 bit OS does work by running the uninstall program. You have to go to the Sunbelt support site and find their utility for removing their anti-spyware program. This is not documented at all on their web site, I had to resort to google.
I have also used AVG and agree that it is a resource hog, but if it needs to be removed for troubleshooting purposes, it is fairly painless, and it seems to work OK in 64 bit OSs with no issues. It really bothers me that 5 years after Microsoft released a 64 bit OS for the desktop (X64 XP) there are AV/ maleware vendors that can't get it to work with a 64 bit windows OS (Maleware Bytes real time protection doesn't, although you can run scans).
Lastly, it looks like VIPRE comes to Sunbelt through an acquisition/merger of another company. I hope they don't "symantec-ize" future product dev.
Haven't used Bitware Defender in awhile, not sure where it stands..

Posted - 02/17/2009 : 05:37:02 AM Vipre has a great deal for a home user. Unlimited single residence license for $49.00
They offer a discount for multiple copies to consultants which makes it reasonable.
I use it at home and I am moving my clients to Vipre from AVG. Much less intrusive and a smaller footprint..

Posted - 02/16/2009 : 1:19:00 PM Well, over the past 13 years I've used these:
McAfee - all-round horrible. Trend Micro Enterprise - good product, not cheap - mediocre support out of S.E. Asia. Sunbelt VIPRE - good product, relativley inexpensive - very good support out of Clearwater, Florida (USA). |

Posted - 02/16/2009 : 12:13:48 PM Yeah, AVG seems pretty reliable but takes FOREVER to run a scan. That has been my only beef with it. Never used Vipre. I am wanting to standardise the AV platform across all my customers, so I need something that is easy to install and get set up, and works pretty invisibly in the background. AVG was quite a bear to get setup on a server - LOTs of steps even after installing it there were many things to configure after the fact. |

Posted - 02/16/2009 : 11:55:06 AM Sunbelt VIPRE.
Low resource usage. Good detection. Reasonable price-point and Sunbelt provides excellent support for all their products.
I currently use Sunbelt: VIPRE NINJA Double-Take.
FWIW. |
