On 2008R2 server, can I install printer drivers for both the 64b clients that connect to them and 32b drivers for the XP boxes that use that server as their print server?
I would like to have one printer server that can support both 64 and 32 bit clients.

Don't forget that HP uses Universal drivers for most of their network printers now. So make sure you have both 32 and 64 bit downloaded and extracted to different folders, then import them separately from your Print Manager console on your print server. |

Hi Rickels,
Using the same version of the driver is correct down even to the PCL type.
My advice is go to HP's website and download the latest PCL6 drivers for Windows 2003 32bit, and then Windows 2003 64bit (unless you're using a Windows 2008 server). Change out the main driver to the 64bit you just downloaded first, then on the sharing tab hit additional drivers, and select the 32 bit driver you just downloaded.
This should work, if not try the Universal Print Driver often loads both. |

I was having this same issue and the advice to make sure that "all the version numbers for the printer's drivers must be the same" is GREATLY appreciated.
I now have all my printers working except for one HP 3500 color printer. The 64 bit driver installed just fine and the test page looks good, but after I select the 32 bit driver I get an additional dialog box that says "Please provide the path to Windows media (x86 processor)". The path defaults to D:\i386. I have it with an XP install disk and a Server 2003 install disk, but both are rejected. Anybody know that it is looking for? |

I'm pretty sure I've done this by connecting with a 32-bit OS to the printers through windows explorer. Then connect to the server properties and adding a driver from the 32-bit host.
\\printserver - File -> Server Properties - Drivers Tab -> add and add the driver. I just don't recall if it was a WS2003x64 or WS2008x64, but I think should work for either.

upgrading will happen as the entire environment will be going to Vsphere and will have one of the servers be a dedicated printer server. But in the short term, not an option |

I "believe" you can run the Print Management Admin Tool on a 2008 Server and then connect to any Windows Print server in order to manage it. This should let you work your printer driver setups without directly upgrading your Print Server for the time being.

Do you have the The Windows Server 2003 R2 Administration Tools Pack? That "may" help... Been ahwile since I had to mess with it...

Installing Additional Drivers
The secret of successful network printer sharing is getting the correct drivers on the server, then the process of deploying them to the client PCs will be completely automatic. Ideally you will have a brand new network with all 64bit Windows 7 desktops, in which case the standard Windows 2008 drivers are all you need, however this rarely occurs and it is far more likely that you will need to support a mixture of 32bit XP and Vista clients too. The most important thing to remember at this point is that all the version numbers for the printer's drivers must be the same, otherwise Windows will not accept them as being valid. Some manufacturers make this easier than others, for example HP are usually very good at clearly displaying the driver versions on their download page:
