I cannot see workstations or servers from other physical/geographic sites from my site and vise versa each site can only see their own. We are all within the same domain. I can ping these workstations and servers by name and replies with no problem. Also verified the dns entry for these machines are registered in dns. the dhcp scope is pointing to the correct wins/dns servers.

Computer browser is running on the server that i am trying to display all the computers on. I assume netbios is wroking it seems to stop working as it leaves our respective locations.

any hints tips or tricks?

Perhaps make certain the computer browser service is running on the PDC? Are you naming for the ease of the administrators or for the ease of the users? I tend to go with the latter.

Further, as an ex-programmer, I never try to hard code variable details into names. So things like "Data2k3" really send my OCD flying. I don't like product-specific names in servers either. ("Email" instead of "Exchange", "DB" instead of "SQL", "WEB" instead of "IIS", "VirusScan" instead of "McAfee").

I guess I've just cleaned up too many networks that had hard-coded names that were no longer valid.

Integration with Novell

Hello everyone.
I have virtually zero experience with Novell networks and I need to integrate Windows 2008 terminal server (and possibly DC - will explain later) to an existing Novell network with NDS/eDirectory.

1) how to enable users logging on to the Win2008 TS to use their user accounts/credentials from the Novell network? Will installing Novell client be sufficient? (and then connecting normally via RDC?)

2) there also might be a Win2008 DC - I've read and downloaded MSDSS (Microsoft Directory Synchronization Services) and tried to install it on a W2k8 DC in a lab env. But MSDSS required Novell Client installed prior to MSDSS installation. So I've installed latest Novell Vista Client (successfully and I haven't found any specifically for Windows 2008), rebooted and tried to install MSDSS again. Unfortunately it complained again about missing Novell client and refused to install. I found no relevant info regarding MSDSS for Windows 2008 while googling.

Any help will be appreciated.

You got me thinking to see what was the difference was networking-wise between clients exhibiting the problem and those that weren't. I was getting a "The system cannot find the file specified." error within the 1058 Event ID, but I was able to access the gpt.ini file without any problems once logged in.

What I discovered was that in my case, it seems to be a driver issue! I was seeing this problem on Dell Latitude D630 and Dell Optiplex 745 computers. I noticed the BROKEN computers had Broadcom 57XX Gigabit Integrated Controller driver v10.26.0.0 dated 3/6/2007.

The WORKING computers had an older version, 9.52.0.0 dated 5/15/2006. I put the older driver on the previously broken computers, and now I can log in with Group Policies properly applied! I've logged in numerous times and the polices are applied error-free, which is not something I've encountered in a while.

The above two drivers are the only two versions listed on Dell's site for these computers. I tried the latest drivers straight from Broadcom, v10.78.0.0 dated 3/19/2008 and they didn't work. I was still getting errors applying group policies.

Its unfortunate that I may forever be dependent on a 2+ year old driver, but I hope this information might be helpful to someone else.

And since the virtual NIC is a different "network" NLA assigns that NIC as Public be default and then the overall lockdown of the Vista machine is Public. This means protocols are turned off on your regular NIC because NLA does the most stringent lock down of all network locations. Something to do next week...

||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||

OK, called UltraBac, got it to work.

I needed to:

1. Dismount the Mailbox database.
2. Allow the database to be overwritten by a restore.

The restore then succeeded.

To test this, we deleted all the messages of a certain user. Now, experienced Exchanges admins (and even someone like myself who is not but has read a bit on the subject) know that you could get these messages back without restoring the entire DB from backup. Even so, I had to test it somehow and couldn't come up with a better idea (short of zapping the entire Exchange server and rebuidling from scratch).

Despite trying several times, we (the Ultrabac guy on the phone and myself) could not get the messages back into the users mailbox.

He had me delete the log files on the server and then restore - this worked. He explained that in "real life" you could move the log files elsewhere, restore and then merge the log files (if I understood correctly). This took us about an hour and 30 mins.

I can't complain about the helpfulness of UltraBac tech support: first rate.

There are some things I think they need to do though, like getting a 800 number for tech support. Not that this was a problem: they agreed to call me back.

Also, it does look like some of the URL links that they have the software (in the error messages) no longer lead to anything on their website.

So I'll keep evaluating and we'll see.

In my experience, some sites produce some excellent audios... all of which are easily downloaded on the various pirate sites. As Claus said, some sort of DRM would be necessary, and honestly I've not run into anything that's safe.

Besides, even if IF there were a way to do it, I'd still charge a fair amount of money for the download. The idea is that you're not paying for the CDs, you're paying for the months of research and, with hope, the organization and accessiblity of the material. For example, a seat in a two-day seminar runs around $1000 (that's about 20 euros right now<g>), and clearly most of that doesn't go to the coffee, donuts, copying costs of the seminar book and rental fee for the meeting room. It's the same story here.

In any case, I didn't post to sell the sets -- I was just happy that I'd figured out a bit of studio "how-to." After all, part of the cert is to agree to abide by a code of ethics, kind of a Hypocratic Oath for IT security - do no harm to the network you are employed to protect and you are even held to a higher standard of ethics than your employer requires, if it is different than the CISSP standard. I would argue that ethical and hacker are mutually exclusive, even though there are groups out there claiming to do that.

The CISSP is described as a mile wide and an inch deep. The scope is broader than just social engineering activities (which I did study as prep for the cert at a local community college), but you look at physical security, law, ethics and DR and business continuity as well, or at least required to have a basic understanding of how they fit into the security picture (e.g., all the security features in Vista are useless if I have physical access to the box).

I would agree that the CISSP is more management focused than on day to day operations security. However, the very existence of CISSP points to the need to get a way from day to day fire fighting and having a long term game plan and strategy (and working within an organization to implement it). Hackers aren't known for being organizational team player types, after all. It's easy to throw bombs at the establishment, but much harder to run things effectively, once you control the reins (reminds me of some right-wing politicians in this country).

For ops security, SANs is the gold standard in training (sometimes described as drinking from a firehose) not Mitnick's training course. However, I think that you only benefit from SANs after you've spent at least a couple of years in the trenches.

For my money, I think all the action is going to be in application security over the next couple of years. It's the most difficult to do and implement well, since it is so close to layer 8 (the end user).

Jim

I double-checked the scripts.ini files for each policy and they all point to the NetLogon folder. However, you bring up a good point. I am not sure when these error messages first appeared. I believe that at the time, I was modifying several policies that I had inherited as a sysadmin. For example, I removed one policy and modified another to include the policy of the one that I had deleted. I also created, then deleted, then recreated a policy which involved a vbs script to change the localadmin account name on users' computers. At the time, using the GPOtool I found that the versions had gotten out of whack. I corrected this issue. But perhaps there is some old stuff left behind. I have triple-checked the policies themselves and cannot find any references to any scripts no longer used. I've checked permissions as this was brought up in other internet sites, and I have tried deleting and recreating some of the GPOs. On the local side of things, one of the client side extensions on my computer, appmgmt.dll won't re-register. Any further guidance would be appreciated.

There are 4 replies, with the last one on 08/21/2008 at 4:28:06 PM by DonJones
Quote:
So let me make sure I understand completely:

You have a file server, running Windows. You want to back it up to an external drive, and for speed reasons you want to use Sata II drives in an eSATA enclosure. Cool.

Some folks who have Macs at home may need to take those drives home in order to get files off of them in an emergency.

The main problem then is the drive interface. The older G4-based Macs likely only have a FireWire 400 interface; the newer G5s typically came with FireWire 800. So FireWire 400 is your lowest common denominator in terms of the Macs.

My only suggestion then would be to have some FireWire enclosures that the eSata drives could be swapped into - assuming you can find such an enclosure.

My alternate suggestion would be to use a multi-interface enclosure. For example, a Drobo supports FireWire 800; you could potentially put FW800 cards into your servers to use for backups. The Drobo also supports FW400, meaning your older G4 users could access the files. Drobos support SATA II drives internally.

If FW800 in your servers isn't an option, you could add a DroboShare, which gives the Drobo a GB Ethernet connection. Perhaps setting up a private network containing only the three file servers and the Drobo could serve as a high-speed backup - not eSATA speed, but better than USB or FW.

Finally, as a last suggestion, you could use your eSATA enclosure to do the backups, and provide you Mac users with an eSATA->USB2 interface. Those exist (http://www.addonics.com/products/io/aau2esa.asp); they obviously won't get eSATA speeds, but since they're only reading a few files that shouldn't be a deal breaker. Or, several companies (http://www.buy.com/prod/cavalry-500gb-7200rpm-usb-2-0-esata-dual-interface-external-hard-drive/q/loc/101/205844199.html) make enclosures with both eSATA and USB2 interfaces - again, USB2 is slower, but should be okay.

Hope that helps. If it were me, I'd probably look at the Drobo+DroboShare route and a private "backup LAN," since that lets three servers share the one external drive. The Drobo could then directly connect to the Macs via FW400, FW800, or USB2, whatever the machine has.

This allowed us to boot the servers into a windows OS environment no matter what Software issues would hit the server and ensures we can always easilly and quickly access the data on the server.

I still believe it can't hurt to have this setup on a windows 2008 server.

I have been experimenting with this and it works fine, BCDedit is great to manage the multi boot environment once you get a hang of the commands.

There is only one strange thing I have noticed. The active booted partition always gets the C: as drive letter.
- When i boot my spare os, the small partition is active and the small partition recieves the C: drive letter.
- When i boot in the system os, the large partition gets C: as drive letter.

This has proven to be annoying for some software packages i use.

Any ideas if you can make the spare os C: partition and system os D: partition stick in a dual boot scenario?

Tom

There are 3 replies, with the last one on 08/20/2008 at 9:03:02 PM by wlazara
Quote:
In case you're wondering:

DFS Cross-File Replication
As organizations expand to include more users and servers, whether they are located in one site or in geographically distributed sites, administrators find it increasingly difficult to provide users with intuitive, fast access to the files they need. Administrators who manage remote or branch offices face additional challenges, such as limiting network traffic over slow wide area network (WAN) connections, ensuring the availability of files during WAN outages or server failures, and ensuring that branch servers are backed up correctly. To help administrators address these challenges, the Distributed File System solution in Windows Server 2008 provides two technologies, DFS Namespaces and DFS Replication, which, when used together, offer simplified, fault-tolerant access to files and WAN-friendly replication.

DFS Replication uses remote differential compression (RDC); this protocol can make a significant difference in minimizing the volume of replicated data that passes over the WAN. Servers running Windows Server 2008 Enterprise or Windows Server 2008 Datacenter enable an additional function called cross-file replication. Cross-file replication is used to further reduce the data that is transmitted across the WAN by using a heuristic to identify when a file exists on the sending computer and not on the receiving computer, but similar files exist on the receiving computer.

Instead of paying for the bandwidth required for replicating entire files each time a change is made to the file, you can employ DFS cross-file replication to use portions of files located on the destination server that are similar to the replicating file at the source server to minimize the amount of data transferred over the WAN. If large files, such as Microsoft® Office PowerPoint® presentations or disk image files, are to be replicated, cross-file RDC can lead to significant reductions in the amount of data that traverses the WAN and have a positive impact on both bandwidth costs and performance.

Navigate to C:\Users\Public\Documents\Hyper-V\Virtual hard disks

2. Right click on a VHD that you want to clone and select Copy, then past. The new cloned VHD will copy here as "vm name-Copy". You can now rename the VHD as you need.

3. Next, just go back into the HyperV console and create a new Virtual machine and when it comes to the disk creation selection, choose the option to use an existing hard disk file.

4.
Exchange 2003 SP2. I currently have Sender ID filtering set to "attach for further anti-spam processing" but like everyone I get clobbered by spam while waiting for Microsoft to publish the next IMF update. I'm considering setting Sender ID filtering to Reject. My concern is how the SMTP Virtual Server will handle email from domains that don't have SPF records. Will Sender ID set to Reject only accept email from domains with valid SPF records or will it use other checks such as MX and A records that match the source IP?

For example, it appears that Yahoo has no SPF records and with my current settings test messages from my Yahoo email account are blocked by IMF. If I archive blocked messages I can see it gives messages from my Yahoo account a SCL rating of about 75%.

Is setting Sender ID filtering to "Reject" a good idea or should I leave it as is so IMF makes the final decision?

The key change (in fact, I think the only change) between settings storage in PMSE vs. GPP is that they changed the GUIDs for each type of policy. So, in SYSVOL, if you compare two GPOs--one set with PMSE and the other with GPP, you would see these different GUIDs. That being said, I haven't seen this firsthand and am only going by what MS has said. You could probably easily test this and see for yourself. the good news is that both products store their settings in XML files rather than the arcane storage formats of some of the other MS extensions.

I get an error with the backup realted to the GRT options (restore individual mail boxes) It's a general XXX
I have seen in the manual that if ur Media server (backup server) is 32bit and your target exchange target machine is 64 bit then this option wont work. Our scenario is that our meida server is 64bit and exchange runs on 32bit so my first question is, is this the reason why GRT wont work?
Secondly to test restores of mailboxes i created a new storage group, new mail box store and dumped a test account in here, logged onto the test account sent a few emails, all worky worky fine. Then, back into my backup server ran a backup of this specific storage group which worked fine (although with the GTR error) Deleted the store off the server and then ran a restore to see if i could get the mailboxes back. When i run this i get the following error:
The job failed with the following error: Unable to attach to a resource. Make sure that all selected resources exist and are online, and then try again.
Is the resource my backup (which if it is the case is in the drive and online) or is it the target exchange server?
