Once again ANOTHER reason to belong to THIS forum...

The decision was made for this particular laptop just prior to my starting. Would I have caught it? Who knows... But knowing the atmosphere at this work site, I know I would have posted here prior to giving my approval.

I also did not build (Sinmantec - Ghost) this laptop or do anything with the test process or have anything to do with setting it up for the VP of sales...

I was simply the only one around when it wouldn't work, and of course the Tech who did the above; was stuck in Chicago due to weather.

Did not matter. I got the brunt of the yelling and was chastised for not placing blame on anyone else. I had no idea if it ever worked at this desk or at all, so for me to place blame was ridiculous. Besides, that was not going to get it working...

For my efforts, a day later, I was told "I" should have immediately known that it was a switch issue and that "I" should have known to start at layer 1 to trouble shoot.

So I am now looking for employment. I really am not concerned if "they" are able to rectify this issue.

HOWEVER! I will take this bit of experience with me to my next adventure, and will be ready to share with anyone that will listen.

Was this the reason for my release? I think it was more, all they needed... Long, crazy, unbelievable story which I will share at the forum meeting. <g>

We plan on attending whether we have to beg borrow or steal the funds to attend.

Thanks for the info Claus!!

It has happened once or twice in the past. It basically seems like a gradual degradation. I will be migrating everything next week to a pair of mailbox servers, as well as breaking out CAS/HT to a pair of servers (all 4 will be hyper-v guests). I am thinking 16 GB ram on the mailbox servers and 8 GB ram on the CAS/HT servers - and redoing the databases to have fewer, larger databases, which in turn will be spread pretty evenly across the two mailbox servers for load balancing.

I have no issues using Windows Update on the host system.

Any suggestions?

Ideally, you want servers to be providing your browse lists, but if you've got machines lurking on the network that never get rebooted, they could end up in election wars, trying to play Master Browser and not be up to the task.

I would probably also start looking at my WINS data, to see if there were old entries or signs that replication isn't working properly, make sure all WINS servers only point to themselves as primary WINS with no secondary specified, etc.

And no, I have no experience with this kind of thing. The above script would dump the files and subfolders into a single (and that is what they would prefer)

My questions are the following

Is there a way to tell if a files is checked out from a command prompt?
If this can be scripted can I work this into the ablove scripts to only pull out the files that are are 'checked in' to Sharepoint?

If not is there a better way to achieve this file export for 'checked in files'?

thanks for any thoughts..

The same goes for the Vista books.

I was wondering the same thing earlier. Is it any wonder that one cannot keep up with writing the manuals at this pace?

There are 15 replies, with the last one on 03/05/2010 at 6:52:29 PM by wobble_wobble
Quote:
Depending on how big your network is and how long your DHCP lease is, this can be problematic.

I suggest a few things.

My first suggestion, would be a batch file to stop and start the DHCP server every few hours. I haven't tested this on a continuous basis, but the following will get the DHCP server to stop and start and not require authourisation

1st batch file, I called it dhcpstop.bat

dhcpstop.bat
sc \\servername stop DHCPServer
wait.bat 20

2nd batch file I called wait.bat

wait.bat
@ping 127.0.0.1 -n 2 -w 1000 >nul
@ping 127.0.0.1 -n %1! -w 1000> nul
sc \\servername start DHCPServer

I then save both to the same location and call the dhcpstop.bat from a scheduled task.
I'm sure others can write neater code but it does what I need. The first stops the DHCP Service, then calls the wait. The 20 is the delay and yes it calls for dhcp to start 20 times.
If the service is started nothing will happen, if its stopped it will attempt to start.

Try the DHCPloc program as mentioned, but you need to run it continuously otherwise you won't notice, a server or something the admins look at will be necessary.

Turn down the lease time on the DHCP if necessary from the default of 8 days, but turn up the Conflict Detection Attempts to make sure that IP's aren't allocated. You will need to change default Ageing and Scavenging as well to remove the older leases, by default they are set to approx 14 days before it removes stuff. If you are on 2k3 AD, then change DNS to only accept Secure Updates.

The following is dependent on if you have WAPs that have Production access. If you have WAP's on the production environment, then I'd would highly suggest you get two sets, one private for production and lock that down to MAC address access as well as changing passwords or RRAS access and one public on the worst connection you can give it.
Help to lock down wireless;
http://articles.techrepublic.com.com/5100-10878_11-6148579.html
http://blogs.zdnet.com/Ou/?p=587

Whats happening to you, sounds a lot like how someone would attempt to gain info from a network.

Our amount of spam dropped dramatically after I started using their block list.
There are 5 replies, with the last one on 03/02/2010 at 2:29:26 PM by yoda
Quote:
Victory @Last!!

This glitch is now history tanx to a ton of patience and the use of Mark R's excellent ProcMonitor and ProcExplorer tools. As I said at the top of this thread, there were a number of applications that would just not run in my Vista admin account. They would run fine when runas administrator or as an ordinary user, but they ABEND, throwing an access denied exception when run without elevation. Initially, I persisted with using WinDbg as a post-mortem debugger, but that was getting me nowhere fast. I gave up on that route and began using ProcMonitor to watch what was happening when I fired up Adobe Acrobat, one of the affected programs. Much tinkering with the filters resulted in finally identifying the file and registry ops that where triggering the access denied issue. Turns out that for whatever reason the app was attempting to write into APPDATA directory of the SYSTEM profile, something that is obviously verboten. The question now evolved into why wasn't the admin profile being used as it should be. I validated a number of enviornment settings, registry keys and file system junction points and confirmed that they were spot on. A quick check of the permissions for all the accounts listed in the HKEY_USERS branch of the registry revealed that the admin account key did not have ANY permissions set. I quickly rectified that and rebooted. Voila, everything started working as it should.

Post-mortem on this suggests that the lack of correct permissions on the HKEY_USERS admin profile key cause the apps to have an access failure, after which they default to using the system profile.

---what a relief

If it needs one, look at my newletter #59 on this site.
2) Assuming ipconfig shows a working NIC, try pinging an IP address to verify IP connectivity. If not, start looking for the basic stuff: is it plugged in, can you ping ANYTHING, etc.
3) Assuming that all works well above, do an IPCONFIG/all to see what's up with name resolution. Are you configured to communicate with a working DNS server? Do you need a WINS server in your network and, if so, are you configured to point to one? That sort of thing. Hope this helps.

Basically, I could not figure out a way to attach a document, and so I am going to point those of you who are interested to a link, which will give you the document.

I must emphasize that it was a document written for my account and team. I have gone through it and tried to make it more generic, but you must be careful when you go through the process to think it through and make sure that each step is appropriate for your environment. In short, just be careful.

The link is going to go to my website. I will do my best to keep it in place, though I plan on doing some redesigning of my website in the not-too-distant future. If I slip up and the link below is broken, reply to this post, and it will remind me to put the link back into place.

Anyway, I hope this helps some one. For those of you whom I've already emailed a copy, you might find this new one a little better. Also, I was going to make it a PDF, but then I thought I'd leave it as a Word document, as it might be easier for you to modify it for your own needs.

Again, I apologize to Moe for hi-jacking his thread. [:I]

UPDATE 03/01/2010 - I am re-designing my website, and so I am removing the URL that used to be below that pointed to the document. If you still need a copy of the document (and I'm still getting requests as recent as just a couple of days ago), go to my website ( www.craigdayton.com ) and send me an email requesting the document. I will email it to you as promptly as possible. Thank you for understanding.
