Hello Everyone,
I'd like to update everyone on the current standing of the Minasi Group Meeting. People who already live in the area are not included. If you are a maybe who is now a definite please inform me. Same goes for definites who are now maybes. I don't mean to nit-pick, but when you email me just say "Maybe" or "definite." I got a real kick out of the high number of "definitly maybe" and "maybe definite" mails I recieved. Let us keep the confusion down, please.
Definites (those who know they are coming) DennisMCSE - Dennis Olidis jadgate - James Adgate Polymath - Jim Vigotty Jwelsh - Jerrod Clarnathan - Nathan rogerd2u - Roger D. erux - Eric Rux Curt - Curt Spanburgh JamesNT - James Summerlin
Maybe's (those who are planning to come but may not be able to get the time off or obtain spousal approval) wim - Wim Verveen JSCLEMEDAVE Joe McGlynn gfreeman - Greg Dave Sweatt Xenophane - claustn cbarns - Cindy Barns Jaxdave - David Bisson Arek - Arek Iskra Aidan Finn
I'm going to assume that at least half the maybe's will become definites. Therefore, I'm going to instruct the hotel room today to set aside the block for us. ------------------------------------------------------------
So far, we have the following for presentations:
Mark Minasi What's New and Great in Longhorn Server 2007 Windows Vista/Server 2007 Security - The Hidden Truth Vista Drilldown: Some of the coolest stuff you're not using yet
Curt Spanburgh Kerberos: Confucious say dog with three heads means owner with three leashes
James Summerlin The Accidental Developer: Using Microsoft's free stuff for scripting and writing applications Digital Rights Management: Protecting IP in a world of pirates and children who don't give a damn
Rhonda Ethereal and Netmon: Where in the hell did that packet come from and what is it doing on my network? Distributed File System: High availability for Word and Excel
Nathan Exchange 2007: Just when you thought Microsoft couldn't make a new way for us to communicate. . . Virtualization: How to prove that 2 servers really equals 10 and other funny math.
Jim Adgate Bitlocker: How to make certain a stolen laptop only costs you the price of the laptop.
-------------------------
If anyone else would like to do a talk, please email me with your name and proposed topic. If you have decided not to do a talk, let me know that as well.
Remember, official dates are MAY 3 - 6 IN THE YEAR 2007.
Thank You All, JamesNT

I'd like to do a presentation that is a more in-depth look at the disk encryption in Vista (Bitlocker) and how it stacks up against the 3rd party disk encryption products like Pointsec. With all the data theft from laptops these days, this ought to interest someone....

Darren,
Let me know about the group policy talk when you can. I'm sure I speak for everyone when I say we would love to have you there with us.
Jim,
If you are serious about doing a presentation, then please email me. Scanning email looking for stuff is faster than traversing the linked list that is this forum.

The date is a bit too far off for me to be able to commit, but I'd love to come.
I can give a real cool hack/defend presentation!
(We'll hack a Unix & Mac box protected through regular defenses, such as firewalls, & then show how IPS systems are invaluable by looking at the packets themselves with Observer (I use that, instead of Sniffer/Ethereal)!)

[sarcasm] According to everything I hear around the net, Mac and Unix are completely secure and unhackable. Do you really want to waste your time and furthermore bring the wrath of the entire slashdot and Mac community down upon our fair forum? [/sarcasm]

W0W, What a treat.
This is fantastic.
FYI: Anne Grub from Windows IT Pro emailed me and told me the Editing staff is considering the write up I did about the first meeting. I have been in touch with Jim V about the photos.
So there is some buzz that will the meeting a nice status.
I will keep you posted on that, because I am pretty sure it will require the permission of anyone's photo in the piece.
Hope this goes through.

Is any one considering bringing their "better halves" to Virgina ??
I am thinking a least on my end, it will be a lot easier to get spousal approval if she can come, and we can combine it with some kind of holiday activities... But unfortunately she is wildly unimpressed by technology, so it would be nice, if there were someone she could go shopping with (or whatever it is "Virgina Beacheans" do in their spare time)
But James I am working really hard to find the time/money to travel across for the meeting, I will e-mail you as soon as there is anything final... |

A few spouses made the trip this year. Everyone was welcome! I spent a week there and there is LOADS to see and do. Theres a grat long beach, lots of history and Washington might be a good day trip (if you like cities).
I'm really hoping I can make it next May. I've got something I'd really love to present but I need permission from the bosses. It's pretty cool and I'd love to get feedback and ideas on it from others but I can't do or say anything until I get the go ahead. Arrgh!!!! Frustration but I understand how my boss feels. |

| Well, it might not be a bad idea to consider a "spouses activities" discussion. Can we get 'em on the forum? We can create a subforum for them to chat? |

It sounds like a good idea... I will see if I can convince mine..
She is not what you can call a "computer super user", but I am trying to get her more acquainted with it, and she does more and more things online... Maybe she will even to a forum post one day |

I didn't bring mine last year, but am definitely considering it this year so long as I can fund it or maybe get my boss to fund me so I can fund her!

Now, how can THAT be bad for a relationship?
Wife insists on own super computer for online games and chatting with new online friends
Wife asks "How do I get on Ebay"
Even worse, Wife asks "What's PayPal"
Wife sets up own office in spare bedroom.
Wife communicates with you via text messages instead of talking, except when her system is down. Then you are on call for 25/8 support. (24/7 is for the rest of the world)
Dinner done via online delivery services.
