Hi All,
I am new to this sit and have been recommended by a friend whom you have helped in the past.
Not sure if this is in the right forum and apologise if it is not.
I am trying to fix a Sony Vaio VGN-NR10E/S that will not connect to the web. Initially it trys for http://go.microsoft.com/fwlink/?LinkId=76277 then fails with the standard 'page cannot be displayed' screen, when I then try for www.google.co.uk I get the same failure.
Spybot has been run and removed a load of parasites followed my Malwarebytes which got rid of some more parasites.
The machine is connecting to my wireless network and picking up an IP address via DHCP and I can ping www.google.co.uk with a 43ms reply so dns is working.
If I go into IE properties the option 'Never dial a connection' has the radio button next to it, which is correct, however this option and the 2 below it are greyed out which I assume is a registry problem.
User account control is turned off so I have full Admin ability.
OS is Vista Home Premium with a good processor and plenty of RAM.
Can anybody give me any ideas as to what is wrong and haow I go about fixing it please.

I don't supposed this computer has been on Facebook recently? A client of mine is having the same issues with their PC which the guy clicked on a Youtube link that has been going around and installs a number of viruses on his computer. At any rate I would also try the Rootkit Revealer at http://technet.microsoft.com/en-us/sysinternals/default.aspx to check for more infections. I also like to use Process Explorer (from the same link), the detail is much better than just using Task Manager and you can do searches on processes you find right from the program.
As for the IE Connection settings, how many Dial-Up and Virtual Private Network settings do you have in the list? If I remember correctly those will be greyed out if you don't have anything configured.

Download, updste and run anti malware from malwarebytes.org
If that doesn't work, run Hijack This.

Hi guys, thx for the replies, I will try all that is advised.
However I had already downloaded and run both Spybot (got the spybot definitions seperately) and anti Malware but because there is no net connection I ran them without updating first in the hope that they would sort enough out to enable me to run them again but including the updates.
Although both programs detected and deleted a number of infections the machine is still not connecting to the net at all, but will quite happily ping any destination I ask it to, which is most annoying. |

You're most likely going to have to download the most recent updates on a clean machine, copy them to a USB flash drive and manually install them on the infected machine. Be careful doing this, so you don't spread the malware/spyware/trojan/worm around.
You could also try booting into safe mode and disinfect your machine from there.
I've also had good luck with SuperAntiSpyware:

There is a free version and the bonus is this one will run in Safe mode.

Burn the Hijack This install file to a CD and try to run it that way.
Also, look in the registry. Follow the same path in HKLM & HKCU

Yes Aidan Bonjour is on the machine but it is something to do with itunes/iplayer and is from Appl.inc.
So far I have run SpyBot, Malwarbytes Anti Malware, Superantispyware and all have found problems and solved them.
However I am unable to update any of them in realtime as the damn machine still won't allow me to browse but is quite happy to ping any destination I ask it to.

Delete those ^^. If that doesn't help, the next thing I would try is, disable Symantec or uninstall it if the subscription had ended. Be aware that Symantec programs are hard to stop from loading at boot time even if disabled in msconfig.
While it might not help the current problem, I'd get rid of the Yahoo & Windows live toolbars. Toolbars aren't the most secure things in the world. The Google toolbar is enough and I probably shouldn't have that either.

Thx Don, personally I agree with you regarding tool bars, in some cases they are as bad as virus/malware programs.

Bingo
Took out the 3 tool bars and no effect.
Took out all of the Symantec stuff and connection was almost instantanious.
