This just started happening today. This is on Exch 03 with svr 03 & outlook 07. I've not had this problem before today, event viewer show nothing wrong and I'm currently checking out updates. (No updates installed since 6/27)
Anyway - I cannot create mailboxes for new users. We have temp interns that work for us sometimes and I always create their profile (copying an existing users acct) via exchange ADU&C so that it will create the mailbox when I set up their outlook and have everything ready the morning they start. Today, that didn't happen. When I went to set up her outlook (which normally will take her logon and get all the info from exch) it just sat there looking stupid! I tried removing her completely from the system and recreating with a slight name change with the same results. I even created a false user (test test), logged in as that user to set up outlook and still no mailbox.
Edit - Almost forgot - When setting up outlook, I get the error msg "the name cannot be matched to a name in the address list"
I'm currently searching the web for help.
I hope someone has an answer/solution for me, or at least a suggestion as to where I can look.

Scott:
If I am not mistaken one needs to send a test message to that user before its mailbox is created????? Do you see her mailbox in the ESM?

You are not.
But what Scott is not seeing but should be seeing is the new user on the *GAL*.
Very strange. Are all Exchange services actually running? |

| Is the RUS running correctly? Run an Exchange Best Practice Analyzer health check to see if eny problems exist, this tool is a great help for finding problems. |

Can they log on using OWA? That doesn't use the GAL during the login process.
If that opens then the mailbox is there, but there is probably an issue with the RUS. |

MC - In the past, the mailbox was created after I set up the new user's Outlook for the first time. I sent a test email to her but I get undeliverable error msg "The e-mail account does not exist at the organization this message was sent to. Check the e-mail address, or contact the recipient directly to find out the correct address."
CJ - As far as I can tell, all Exch services are running. I even had the Exch svr re-booted this morning with no change. And she is not in the Global Address List yet, of which I think is part of the initial Outlook setup process.
Jazzy - RUS?? Dare I say "huh?" I totally forgot about ExBPA - getting ready to run that next.
Tomo - Can't log into OWA as the new user. Keeps asking or user name/password. After entering that 3 or 4 times, it says 'access denied'. I can, however, log in as me, so I know OWA does work.
I'll post the results of the analysis as soon as it's done. Thanks for all the help! |

RUS = Recipient Update Service
Did the new account receive its Mail addresses (in AD) from templates? |

Jazzy gets the prize!
After running ExBPA and seeing a whole $#!^load of items listed int the report, the top 2 items were "Connection to Recipient Update Service DC failed". Thankfully, it had directions on how to check and fix it.
Problem ended up being this. A few weeks ago, I demoted the old DC (an old IBM Netfinity 5100 950Mhz P3) and it's only job now as a member server is to run my backup to tape.
Since I did not know about RUS (until today), I did not change the DC on it (which I just did).
After deleting the user from the workstation she was on and recreating her local profile, then running Outlook for the (again) first time, everything ran smoothly. Outlook found Exch, Exch said "I know you" and created the mailbox and everyone is happy.
I Thank You all again for your help. I don't expect any more problems. At least until I get my new Dell R710 server with MS Svr 2008 R2 and Exch 2010 to go with it.
The other things on the list, you ask? "NIC DRIVER 2YEARS OLD", "STORAGE DRIVER 2 YEARS OLD". were most of them. I need to work out the others |

That's what makes this tool so cool, it not only reports the problem but also gives information about how to solve it.
