IIRC, you could install AR over the network using Group Policy (or manually) and it would remove or replace the previous version.

EDIT - automatically that is.

With AR 10.1.2, this no longer works.

Is anyone else seeing this?

Is this because of the fact 10.1.2 is actually 10.1.0 with 10.1.2 slipstreamed into it (hoping that's the right term).

Fact of the matter is that MOST of the time, I will know it because I installed the previous version with a .msi which I've kept.
