One of the guys at work was raving (a good thing) about Adobe's new "cloud" offerings. Basically you rent Photoshop or even their entire suite on a monthly per user basis, using the s/w on any PC, one at a time (per user). The software is installed on your PC so it's not a true cloud app. And it seems to be cheaper than an outright purchase.

Haven't looked into it beyond that.

The Adobe Creative Cloud was announced last October, I think. Here's the link for more information:

http://www.adobe.com/products/creativecloud.html

"What is Creative Cloud?
Adobe Creative Cloud is the digital hub that lets you download and install every Adobe Creative Suite 6 application; access online services for file sharing, collaboration, and publishing; and benefit from new apps and features as soon as they're released — giving you the freedom to create anything you can imagine."

Edit: Forgot to add that it's $49 a month for a one year membership.

I was told it was around $20/month for CS. Hmm. Must have a "chat" with my source

Aidan, it looks like the introductory pricing for the first year is $20 off a month, so it's only $30 a month instead of $50 (but you have to be a current registered user of an Adobe CS product). But that gives you full access to all of the Adobe products, not just PhotoShop (Illustrator, Adobe X Pro, Dreamweaver, Premiere, InDesign, After Effects, etc.).

The better way to go would be to charge me, say, $10 for every photo I want to work on there.

Since this was discussed, has anyone looked into it more or even tried it? I'm looking at purchasing a camera, but then want to get Photoshop as well. Buying Photoshop CS6 looks like it costs about $750 for the full version. Buying it via the Adobe Creative Cloud, it costs about $20 a month (the full Crative Cloud Suite costs about $40 a month, but I don't need all those applications). And as long as you are paying, you're entitled to any new version that comes out (if I understand it correctly). So for a years subscription is about $240, so it would take just over 3 years before it cost the same amount as just buying the full version. But if you upgrade the full version within those 3 years, that also bumps up the cost of buying the full version with all the upgrade pricing.

So does anyone else think it makes sense?

Mark,

Don't forget to say they should include bulk licensing. $10 a photo is fine for me, but not for someone like Jimi. The Cloud would bill him out of business at $10 per photo.

I say drop the price down to $5 per photo for those who need over 100 a month, or some such as that.

Dennis, I've recently seen another option to acquiring Adobe's pro software. In some countries and via some channels, you can actually buy a download code for 3 or 12 months of usage. I saw the annual CS6 one was around 1/3 to 2/5 the cost of outright purchase. If you think that the software is updated every 18 months, this is probably also a decent way to stay up to date.
