I have my System Center Essentials 2010's database on a system with SQl 2008 Express installed, and I keep running into database size problems where the primary file exceeds 4 gigs.
The new SQL 2008 R2 Express allows a database file to grow to 10 Gigs, is there anyone who know if FIRST, I can live upgrade that SQL System to the 2008 R2 without losing data (I know backup first just in case). and Second does SQL 2008 R2 run with System Center Essentials 2010?
The System Center Essentials site mentions SQL 2008 R2, but doesn't mention the SQL 2008 R2 Express version although it does mention the SQL 2008 Express version.
If you don't know but wanted to test this process (upgrade/replace) to R2 Express) what general steps and warnings could you provide?
Thanks again to all who help!

Yes, I have seen that statement but it didn't quite answer the question either.
It mentions that SQL 2008 R2 works with SCE 2010, but doesn't mention SQL 2008 R2 Express working with SCE 2010.
So, if no one has any other input or warnings etc, I'll just have to try it and find out I guess |

Well sorry, don't have any more info, we're using SC products, but not the SCE2010 suite. But I assume if R2 is supported (although Express is not explicitly stated), it should work. |

I would assume that the express edition is fine.
Be careful how you do the migration - I'd suggest taking a backup and restoring it to the SQL 2008 Express R2 instance. |

I'm doing some reading up on BLOB storage (RBS), in order to figure out whether it's something we want to do. I was floored when I read an idea I had never thought of before in this article: http://blogs.msdn.com/b/opal/archive/2010/03/24/faq-sharepoint-2010-remote-blob-storage-rbs.aspx?PageIndex=2
Basically they suggest that you can use RBS to get around the 4GB limit of SQL Express.
Q: Any benefit to use RBS FILESTREAM Provider?
Benefit for Windows SharePoint Services 3.0 with Windows Internal Database upgrade:
We no longer support Windows Internal Database (WID) with SharePoint Foundation 2010. However, SQL Server Express has a 4GB DB size limit. The direct upgrade of a content DB > 4gb from WID to SQL Server Express is not supported. To get around of this limit, customer can use RBS FILESTREAM Provider to store all the BLOB content on to file system so the DB size will still remain small.
Rastor - did you end up making the move to deal with your 4GB limit? |
