Hi guys
I'm having problems with our intranet which is running on IIS on a Windows 2003 Domain Controller. The version of IIS is V6.0.
The problem is that links to documents or directories have stopped working. Basically, any hyperlink that starts with "File://" just won't open anymore. There are no error messages.
All this was working fine up until recently. I don't think anything has changed, and I've tried restarting IIS.
Any help or advice would really be appreciated!
Thanks!

Don't know, but I'd bet that Procmon could get you a clue. My guess is that it's some "helpful" security patch.

Thanks Mark. Still baffled by this one!
What is evident is that I AM able to browse (using my broswer!) to the UNC path "\\server\c$\inetpub\intranet\index.html" and the browse my intranet as normal - AND THE LINKS ALL WORK FINE! But as soon as I use the IIS-driven address (http://intranet.company.local) the links don't work.
Any ideas on why this might be happening would be awesome as I am tearing my hair out!
Thanks guys.

OK, according to http://kb.mozillazine.org/Links_to_local_pages_do_not_work this might even be the default behaviour on some, but not all, browsers.

Apart from that, two ideas:

1. If you're experiencing this phenomenon in ANY browser, look at the actual hyperlink address in the source code of the page shown. Maybe IIS is rewriting something?

2. If you've only tried opening these links in IE, this behaviour may be related to security zones - the UNC path is fairly sure to be treated as 'local intranet' while the FQDN of the IIS site could still be in the Internet zone...

Hey guys. I've just had a bit of a kicking about the fact that I haven't fixed this yet! :( So any help would be really appreciated!!
Since I last posted I've found out that this problem occurs in Internet Explorer, Chrome and Firefox. Only tried these three, but from this I assume the problem affects all browsers. I've also migrated the files to another server and tried a new clean IIS install, but still get the same problem.

BUT - there's more, and this is pretty weird I think! I've just discovered that there is NOT a problem if I am logged on to any of my Windows servers! I have tried three servers at various sites - all running IE8, and they open these links no problem at all. In each case I've been logged-in as domain administrator. And before you ask, I've logged-in to my PC with that account but still get the problem.

So - I guess that might be a big clue, but I just can't figure out why these intranet hyperlinks would open from a Windows server, but not from a WinXP or Win7 PC!?

Any more advice would be awesome!

Durnit ... if you hadn't put WinXP in the last sentence, I was going to suggest UAC being the culprit. At least that was my first thought when you said it's not a problem on the Servers.

On the client side, have you tried adding the server to Trusted Sites, and then setting security on Trusted Sites to low? That pretty much opens the door to almost every maneuver you can make, as far as all those granular options under security that you might want to allow\disallow, etc.

Hey Anne - thank you so much for this!! I've just added our intranet site address to my Trusted Sites, and now its working fine! Awesome!
OK - so the question is, can I push this out as a trusted site to clients? I don't really wanna have to ask everyone to do this if I can automate it. I'm being lazy here as I am thinking a GPO might do it? I promise I'll look once I've hit send on this!
And is it a little weird that it doesn't trust a local intranet already?
Thanks again!

Well, Tim... I suggested exactly this two weeks ago.

The question is, how does it know that it's a local intranet.

Because of this other stupid, stinky little setting ...

Tools\IE Options\Security\Intranet Sites\Sites and "Automatically detect Intranet"

I'm not sure I've figured out its precise logic, but I think it looks at a combination of same-segment IP address and\or Domain logged onto in order to determine what automatically goes into Intranet zone. When I'm troubleshooting, it's one of the things that I make sure to clear.
