I would like to replace our current wireless network. Currently it just passes the ip address requests to dhcp server, so all the phones and ipads take up address space. And sometimes lead to ip conflicts when someone comes in with a laptop hibernated from home.

So what I'm looking for is recommendations about access points, (I'm thinking I'll need 3 to cover the floor (elevator and other central core stuff kills the signal) and it's a big floor)) and ideas on configuration to keep mobile devices on a separate subnet and if that would be an issue.

I hope this question makes sense. Basically I guess I'm looking for the best way to set up a newe wireless network.

Thanks all!!

Jimi,

This is a solution we looked at and may deploy to a customer. It has intelligence build into it and may solve some of your problems.
I have a price that we got for the software and 3 devices, but as I learn all the time, the price depends on whom you are and where you are. I'll mail you off line with what we got price wise.

Joe

How long is the DHCP lease? For WiFi clients, it should be a lot shorter than the standard LAN/Workstation. Think in terms of hours, not days.

I don't have DHCP setup on the AP's. Wireless clients get their IP address from our DHCP server, not the wireless AP. With 90 workstations, do you think setting DHCP to a much shorter lease, say 10 hours would be a bad thing?

We typically do 13 hour leases, haven't had any issues (knock on wood).

Thanks Wes. Do you know if I change the lease time, will it immediately force a renewal of all the leases? I'm wondering if I should wait to the weekend and do it when nobody his here and logged in.

Any leases that have been given will be respected - there is no mechanism I know of in DHCP for the server to reach out to clients, it's always the other way around.

Cool! What I had actually meant was that if I reset the lease, would the existing leases be terminated, requiring reboots of the workstations to get new ones. I'm taking it from your answer that this wouldn't happen and that whatever leases were out there would be fine and then the workstations would just request new ones (if set for 13 hours) at 6.5 hours??
