They even have an Open Source Software Lab. Back in about 2005 they hired Bill Hilf, a Linux veteran who worked for IBM's Linux development to run the OSS Lab. So as much as people don`t see Microsoft as a big Open Source company, they have a lot of Open Source initiatives.
Without Microsoft would Apple be what they currently are? More power to Microsoft in doing this stuff. What comes around goes around and Microsoft finds new ideas from watching what others are doing, as with Apple and all the others when seeing what user’s desire.
Now if only Microsoft could stop all the crappy or cheap hardware from being sold with Windows on them. The rise of Apple sales is due to people getting burnt by a hardware vendor selling crap for components machines.
Apple would feel these pains as well if they released OS X to be put on any and all hardware. Told people back in the day, do not buy Packard Bell machines, but today that list is hit or miss per machine from all vendors. Dell has good hardware and the make hardware that makes you cry when matched with Windows. What I just said about Dell, it is the same for Toshiba, Sony, Lenovo and many others.
Go Microsoft, I find it easy to buy and use their products when I read they are involved in sharing their profits in this kind of stuff.

It should be noted that the big contributions were the Hyper-V integration components ... :-) When Ubuntu 12.04 RTMs it'll have the ICs built in and should "just work" on Hyper-V. I'm told, unfortunately, that Ubuntu is one of the few distros that keeps their kernel up to date. I am a Linux noob (permanently in that status) so I can't confirm how true that one is myself.
