Hi All

Its been a while since i've needed to look at the boot sequence of Windows (not since the days of ntldr has got up and walked off your hard drive)

I've spent a good few hours cross eyed on wiki and websites looking at this so i've decided to cut to the chase. Does anyone have a good quick breakdown of the windows boot process from POST to Logon

As I recall, these are the basic steps. Steps 8 and 9 are really more detailed than shown.
1. BIOS settings indicate boot drive
2. MBR code in boot drive is run
3. Partition table in MBR indicates Primary Active Partition
4. Boot sector code in Primary Active Partion is run (So far the steps are just like XP)
5. Bootmgr in the System Partition (usually 100 MB partition)is run
6. Bootmgr reads BCD (also on System partiton) for boot info - like old Boot.ini
7. Winload.exe then runs from Boot Partition ( in \Windows\System32)
8. Winload begins Kernel loading process including drivers & kernel
9. Winlogon (I think) provides logon screen
