Hi All,

I have too many techs constantly trying to RDP into the same server to access a particular application. We all forget to log off, meaning we of course reach the session limit (2 + console) and then others can't connect.

I figured this would be easy to fix with a GPO.

I have a GPO applied to the server in question, and the server is getting the settings I've created:

Set time limit for active for idle RDP sessions: Enabled, 1 hour
Set time limit for disconnected sessions: Enabled, 1 hour
Terminate session when time limits are reached: Enabled

No user-specific settings are applied anywhere, and I'm under the impression they would be overridden by the computer settings anyway.

Unfortunately this isn't working - sessions just aren't terminated.

I'm sure I'm missing something simple. Thoughts?

Thanks,
James

Server is 2003 R2. Clients are a mix, mostly Vista and 7.

Thanks,
James

Well those settings should work, at least it does in our environment. Have you done the basic troubleshooting?

Have you run gpresult/RSoP to be sure there's no other setting interfering? You know the settings you're using can be set in both computer and user portion of the GPO, right?
Have you tried configuring just the timelimit for active but idle sessions? Is the session disconnected in that case?

Also, note that if you're connecting to the console session, the session timelimits do not apply.

I had to turn on the user side of the GPO as well, before it started working. I had that exact same problem happening to us, people "forget" to log off and keep the sessions open forever.

I've done all the normal troubleshooting and confirmed the registry settings are the way they should be, thus they are getting propagated from the GPO. Not sure what to make of this.

I haven't tested the user config, but was hoping to keep this limited to a couple servers.
