Hello,
I have a request to look for something that will allow us to share documents etc with partners, customers, and others online. Basically the idea is for a place where my company can share docs with outside users. We do not want to give them VPN access to our network. But we want to have the opportunity to lock down certain folders or files by allowing only specific people to access them. Would it better to look at the gdrive, drop box, skydrive, and or something similar for this solution or would it be a better idea in looking at the private cloud type solution? Any feedback would be much appreciated!

Thanks
DC

There are several ways you could do this.

If you are looking at cloud providers then
http://www.egnyte.com/
https://www.box.com/enterprise/consolidated-file-services/
http://www.huddle.com

are market leaders. I really like what egnyte are doing.

Otherwise

https://www.dropbox.com/teams/features#sharing

http://windows.microsoft.com/en-HK/skydrive/home

https://drive.google.com/start#home

Like anything, assess your budget costs, bandwidth and most importantly a security assessment.

Marks cloud CD is well worth a purchase

Yep - or sharepoint. Or rent some co-lo or a vps and place an open-source solution on it.
There are lots of ways to do it.
Choosing the right one is the tough decision.

Two other s for consideration;

SBS 2011 has the ability to share files over a Web Site under Remote Web Work Place.

Licensing issues. You need a CAL for every user or device authenticating to the SBS server.

You put these Doc's on Google or anywhere else you do not 100% own these Doc's any more.

Thanks everyone for your input. We are planning on moving to Sharepoint the end of this year. I need something for the managers before the Sharepoint roll out. I will take a look at the suggestions.

Thanks again,
DC

If you're considering a Cloud hosted solution, have a look at SpiderOak:

https://spideroak.com/

I've been hearing good things about them. Supposed to be more secure than Dropbox, Google Drive and etc.

Not used it, myself.

ShareFile from Citrix already considered?

SharePoint is nice, but it is currently more designed for internal use, because every user accessing the SharePoint enviroment needs to have an AD-Account, and for secure external access you will need to leverage TMG or UAG.
And those external users will consume a SharePoint license also (if those external user are not employers that can be quite difficult to arrange).

Life is like a box of chocolates, you never know what you gonna get.

You do need the fullblown Sharepoint, Sharepoint Foundation is for free (besides the W2K8 R2 license ofc) and does not need an AD
