Can anyone recommend something relatively simple?
We would want users to be able to enter requests and management to approve before having the appropriate persons execute the tasks in question.
I suppose something with a web interface would work best.
A simple Access database in a shared folder would probably be functional but not very user friendly.
I realize there are hosted solutions, some relatively costly.
$1000, $1500 per month would be out of our price range.
This would just be for maintenance and tech support requests.
Just looking around at this point.

I would look into CRM 2011 online and use the new features to tie it into Share Point services. The list web part will also help a great deal. This way the work flow from the WPC engine will work in both applications. How many seats are you looking at? The CRM 2011 online package provides an entire application section for "Service" which is servicing clients. A tech support model would be perfect.

If anyone is allowed to make a request directly, that could be quite a few. More than 25 I would say.
Some suggested an Access database but without a web front-end interface, it would be a clumsey solution.

Ok, I have worked on projects with Access back ends.
The database maintenance is going to be an on going issue. SQL is a better option. But if your going to "Customise" all this stuff, your better off getting an application that will also have all the tables and databases and the customizable functionalities in a packaged app.
Since Business always changes, having a solution that can change is important. Just check out CRM 2011 Online to see the options provided and you get some idea of what is possible.
Even on a PDA, you can have minimum functionallity to a cell phone that will allow business to be conducted. About time, right? Well there is a lot out there but 25 seats of Sales Farce is about 115 bucks a month. That's steep. MSCRM is a lot cheaper in the cloud but your really trying to save money so even that may be too much.

SpiceWorks have a great (and very customizable) Help Desk ticketing system. Tons of great plugins for it written by the community.
