Is it possible to alter a registry setting in a Windows 7 home edition computer to allow another computer on my home network to shut it down remotely? I know that you can't log in remotely but I read somewhere that you could alter the registry to allow a remote shutdown command to work. At present if you try you get an error code 5. Many thnaks for any help.
To my knowledge, remote shutdown with the shutdown command doesn't work on Home Edition, only Pro and Ultimate... And since you can't provide credentials with it, you will get an access denied error.
Thank you for the replies. Jeff you are corect that the shutdown command doesn't work remotely with the home edition. It was just that I had read in another post that it was possible to change the registry to allow this to happen. Unfortunately they didn't say how and I don't think they weare actually correct. I could use logmein and I do use it frequently. However I want the remote shutdown to turn off the kids computers when they are playing games and have been called to sit down at the table but are "just quickly finishing the game" Any other ideas appreciated.
