I have a USB external hd on my xp box that has a public IP address. I want to upload pictures for off-site to the drive. I shared the drive with "sharename" added a user to the security that I will login with. when I get home and try the drive from explorer it comes back that I do not have permission to the drive. when I am typing the IP in explorer it will populate the line with the share name so I know it sees it. also it will show the administrator "share$", if I click on it the user and password box come up, but then denies access to it.
Why does it not give me the user and password box when I try to connect to the share I created?
And what needs to be done on the pc so I can connect? Or what do I type from home to connect? I have tried the commands used in command prompt to enter user and pass with login, does not work.

You've probably set NTFS permissions on the disk and/or share...? That's the only reason I can think of that would explain what you experience.
If so, give NTFS permissions on the disk to 'everyone' and you're done.
Note: With rights to 'everyone' the disk won't be secure... If security is demanded, use BitLocker or something like it.

On my Synology NAS at home I'm not using the AD integration options, I've created a user account on the Synology with the appropriate rights... this works for me, can take the NAS with me everywhere and it works. This would be a better option since 'everyone' will not be granted rights.

"everyone" is not an option for this, it is wide open as it is, can't leave the porch light on too.
