Kinda odd that I'm posting this first.

So the big change is suddenly it's Exchange 2003 again and now we only have a front end and back end role Not much info on what the upgrade process is.

Also the new Data Loss Prevention feature for PCI and other sensitive data, that is very useful!

Well they more or less are putting mailboxes in the back with DAG's and all the other roles on the front.

And from the reading I see Lync 2013 Preview is out.

Not exactly. From what I'm reading the back end will run most of the work of the Mailbox, Hub Transport, CAS and Unified Messaging Roles. The front end will run a portion of the CAS role (proxying to the back end) and also the Edge Transport Role. It's supposed to make load balancing much simpler.

The documentation is pretty sparse at the moment though.

Let me rephrase - Ex 2010, CAS UM HUB Roles pn front end servers and Mailbox on backend.

And yes, the 2013 looks different.

The major advantage of the new architecture is that it makes upgrades and load balancing much easier. Based on the topics I see about upgrading Exchange 2010 roles I agree with MS thate there was room for improvement here. But there are many other new things, how about new public folders with same technology as normal mailboxes? No more PF replication, just DAG.

So Public Folders have survived one more Exchange version?

Otherwise, could a company still function with a single E2K13 server?

I have to think so - otherwise MS would lose all those single server customers (many will have gone hosted, but that's another story).

You can instell both roles on a single server, no problem.

Public folders did not only survive another Exchange version, they're now fully integrated like they never where before. And have become available in Office 365 too. I think this is the definitieve signal that public folders are here to stay. I mean, customers need them and Microsoft fixed them.
