I think we have all seen some odd nutrition habits in our IT work. One that often appalled me was how many techs were downing a few cans of cola in the morning.
Being in the "TEAM" at a consulting company you often join the "Team" for the project meeting while doing a Grande Mocha something or other three times a day. Then we get the idea that we have to cut down on animal fat so we get a "Smoothie" for lunch and munch on some air popped pop corn and thing we are helping the body.

So at the time, who was I to ding the cola folks.

Well, thank GOD I've got that all behind me but there is the weight left behind, right?

So if I every get the idea that I can start drinking the soda again I will remember this recent news and continue on my water consumtion instead.

Sugary drinks lead to alterations in muscles similar to those in people with obesity problems and type 2 diabetes, researchers in Britain said.

Dr. Hans-Peter Kubis of Bangor University in England said the research showed regularly drinking soft drinks changed the way muscles use food as fuel, making them prefer to burn sugars over fats.

"This study proved our concerns over sugary drinks have been correct. Not only can regular sugar intake acutely change our body metabolism; in fact it seems that our muscles are able to sense the sugars and make our metabolism more inefficient, not only in the present but in the future as well," Kubis said in a statement.

"This will lead a reduced ability to burn fat and to fat gain. Moreover, it will make it more difficult for our body to cope with rises in blood sugar. What is clear here is that our body adjusts to regular soft drink consumption and prepares itself for the future diet by changing muscle metabolism via altered gene activity -- encouraging unhealthy adaptations similar to those seen in people with obesity problems and type 2 diabetes."

The study, published in the European Journal of Nutrition, found the switch to an inefficient metabolism was seen in the participants who were lightly active, lean male and females drinking soft drinks for only four weeks.

"Together with our findings about how drinking soft drinks dulls the perception of sweetness, our new results give a stark warning against regularly drinking sugar sweetened drinks," Kubis concluded.

Our "dear" mayor- Michael Bloomberg wants to ban large size sugary drinks. Sounds promising.

It is absolutly beyond ok. It's great.
And Green coffe extract is even better.
But, I put some organic honey and skim milk into mine.

Giving up the sugar habit in my coffee.

Sometimes I use cream and I keep the sweet out of it and eat some grapes or a banana in the A.M. for a decent mix.

Nice Curt, was good to read.

As far as New York and Mr. Bloomberg... I am not a fan of telling someone how large of a container they can purchase a soda in, it will not stop anyone from drinking more. As for the state of NY, I think they have a Bottle Return program of 5 cents per container? So is Bloomberg thinking of the people and their consumption of soda for health reasons OR is it to collect more on the per container by limiting the size and making people buy 2 over 1? Yep, that was said by a guy that lives in Iowa, of which we have a bottle deposit program. The State Gov't knows a certian number of cans will never make it full circle and leaves the deposit collected in the states pocket over the long run. How much is left in the state pocket in NY when people send the can to the land fill over taking them back for the deposit?

As for me, coffee with half & half. Will have to try eating fresh fruit with my coffee, maybe some bing cherry's?

Thanks. I really don't care about the Soda ban thing. I was gaining weight in Southern California from "healthy Drinks".
All plants make sugars and store them as starches. Cows gain weight from eating plant stores of sugar. If we did not have something to build our bodies, we would be dead, right?

But moderation is the point. I even noticed tht there are 30 grams of sugar in the most popular Cranberry Juice cocktail. But it's not High Fruitose Corn Syrup anymore. It's Beet and cane sugar.

Joe, like everything else, depends on how much you consume.

OK how's thus coffee when its bright and whiskey when its dark.

Our global position and climate make it about 50/50.

Bloomberg's just a nutrition Calvinist.<g>

Annoys me because when I get a soda -- diet, Curt!<g> -- I like a monster cup and lots of ice, about 25% soda. I end up with lots of water with at least a bit of interesting flavor.
