I've found you'll be missing many of the features you get with the model specific drivers, which = user complaints. We do have to use the universal driver for some older printers on our 2008 servers though.

Are you having a problem with print spooler stability?

Yes we are, from Access Denied errors, to trays missing from the printer driver time and again

Many of the new Business HP Printers ONLY use the Universal Printer Driver, with no specific model driver available.

So what choice is there?

The single biggest issue was related to fonts and printing correctly on customized documents provided to our company from outside sources.

General day to day printing has worked ok overall with the HP Universal drivers with minor exceptions.

We are generally using 5.4 but also have 5.3 installed. We are using a mixture of PCL 5/6 and PS depending on the printing requirements of the department. The older 4250 series, we couldn't use the Universal drivers because of problems with fonts, so we use the specific print drivers, this was for the group that does a lot of specialty printing.
