When an ISA/TMG server/appliance regulates access to and from the LAN in which an Exchange server is running, what type of client, if any should the Exchange server be?

- SecureNAT client?
- Firewall client?
- Web Proxy client?

Besides inbound and outbound SMTP, I'll need inbound HTTPS for OWA.

And probably HTTP for Windows updates.

Because of SMTP, I'm leaning toward "Firewall Client" (need more than simple web proxy or just HTTP/S) but haven't confirmed that by consulting online sources.

There should be a wizard in the ISA/TMG to publish Exchange for you and it should be labeled as such.

Right. But if (if) Exchange is supposed to be a "Firewall Client" which requires installation of software on the client (the Exchange server) is the publishing wizard going to take care of that?

I would think the installation of the client is something done separately.

I'm looking for the answer in Shinder's "ISA Server 2006 Migration Guide" - good book but not always easy to find exactly what you're looking for amidst all the details.

Back when I used ISA, I don't recall installing a client on the Exchange server at all.

There are options that do not require this:

- SecureNAT
- Web Proxy

Please be aware that Exchange doesn't use the IE Proxy settings for outbound HTTP/HTTPS traffic. Instead you should configure the proxy in the Winhttp settings:
netsh winhttp set proxy proxy-server="http=ProxyServer:8080"
