Hi All,

I have a minor issue that has existed from setup date of 5 years ago, that has become a larger issue in the last day.

Since connecting 5 clients to a Server running WS 2003, one of these clients has had the issue of not being able to logon to the domain if the internet is down (which thankfully has only happened once when ISP accidently terminated DSL account). If trying to logon to domain without internet being on, will come up with a screen missing all of its icons, and only a mouse cursor.

I have had a look at the client settings on the server, and all 5 clients appear to be identical when looking at their properties.

Unable to examine settings on the client - not quite sure what to look for on client end anyhow.

The issue with one of the clients has in the last day become one that occurs all the time now even with internet working perfectly. Network card + cable all appears to be Ok.

Have tried restarting the server, and moving the client to a different ethernet cable without improvement.

I don't feel this is a difficult problem, but not sure where to start, and would appreciate any suggestions. (The other 4 clients are working perfectly, and each is running Windows XP Pro).

Any assistance appreciated.

If I can add a further finding to the above: the client system has been removed from site for hardware testing & everything appears to be OK at that level. The system has been started & logged on to each of the 3 logins (administrator, user, and another).

Each one demonstrates the same behavior of logging in with desktop only visible, but nothing else (no desktop icons, start button etc). However if ethernet cable is connected from a separate router with internet access, each login works with all the correct icons.

Still think this is something simple, but as I have not encountered this before, still seeking suggestions.

My searching so far has mentioned infection as a cause (the system is clean), editing the registry, and editing Group Policy. Still researching the last 2.

Static IP settings or dynamic?
Anything in the Hosts file?

What DNS server is the client using in IP settings, nslookup?

Check Group Policy Results for the problem PC and another working computer and compare.

Does the AD domain end in a TLD? (.com, .net, .biz, etc.) just curious...

I would check your DNS (as stated above) and/or the HOSTS file for something odd.

Hi Joe & Anthony,

Thanks for the help. I have had a look at the local hosts file & there is nothing in there.

The IP settings are dynamic - my only plan is to change these to static (even though all the other clients are working with dynamic OK).

The DNS on this computer at the moment is that of the ISP (as I have removed system from site & connected to different modem via ethernet cable). When I do this btw, the system is able to start with all the normal icons on the screen.

When the system is disconnected from ethernet, it will demonstrate the issue of starting Windows but not coming up with anything apart from the desktop wallpaper.

I thought I would try to open the control panel via the task manager (running the task control or control.exe). When I try doing this, the application is visible in the tasks list, but no control panel opens). I have even tried "control netcpl.cpl" without this opening.

Basically, if the 'wallpaper' only issue occurs while the system is on site, I am unable to do anything apart from opening the task manager.

Further assistance greatly appreciated. I still think this is a simple issue, but have been unable to get to the bottom of it.

Minnow.

Some additional information:

The below error is from the system event properties, and shows what happens when the client system is started without ethernet cable inserted:

Event Type: Error
Event Source: NETLOGON
Event Category: None
Event ID: 5719
Date: 6/09/2012
Time: 10:43:04 AM
User: N/A
Computer: WORKSTATION5
Description:
No Domain Controller is available for domain SMALLBUSINESS due to the following:
There are currently no logon servers available to service the logon request. .
Make sure that the computer is connected to the network and try again. If the problem persists, please contact your domain administrator.

For more information, see Help and Support Center at http://go.microsoft.com/fwlink/events.asp.
Data:
0000: 5e 00 00 c0

--END OF DESCRIPTION

Now a message like this would be expected, but should not prevent Windows from starting normally on the client system?

Can we see an IPconfig from the server, working client and problem client.

What happens if you point the trouble client DNS at the server?

What happens if you disconnect the internet WAN connection, can the troubled client login?

I'd say prob an application at startup depending on the net to function
